This picture of Jesus shows into a world where you can see Jesus working and how victory in the heavenly realm is being daily. At first glance you will notice Jesus sending out the joyous angels surrounded by a huge rainbow. As we know God chose the rainbow as a sign of the covenant he made with every living creature on the earth, that he would never again flood the earth to destroy all life. God said “Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures.”(Genesis 9:13-16) I believe that in this instance though, the artist was trying to portray the new covenant that was made. Just like the old promise that was made and kept this new promise that Jesus came so that we could be with him in heaven, is just as alive and active. When we see rainbows, we can be reminded of God’s promises and in this picture of Jesus, the promises can be seen. As you follow the angels you will notice that the angels are not just singing and dancing, but in the lower portion they are actually taking people up to heaven. Death is now defeated as seen in John 3:16 for it states “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. There are a couple instance in the picture where you can see this:
1. If you look by the graveyard there is an open grave with a woman looking up to Jesus standing inside the grave. The woman was dead, but because of Jesus she is able to not die, but have eternal life in heave. We can also see this in our daily lives, for before we accept God into our hearts we are dead in sin, but when we ask Jesus into our hearts and accept that He is our savior, we get up out of our graves and start living.
2. Another instance can be seen where there is an angel with a child and the child’s parents. Now you may see it another way, but to me it looks like the angel is bringing the child back to her parents. You could see it that the angel is taking the child to heaven, but the parents arms are open wide and the look like they are accepting the child into their embrace. Now God is a great physician and I have heard of many instances where God heals the sick, not just in the bible but in today’s world where we see unexpected healing. It seems to me that Jesus sent the angel out to heal the child from sickness and is now bringing the child back from a death sentence and is giving her back to her parents.
The rest of the humans in the picture are holding up their hands to Jesus and looking in awe, which makes it seem like a little peak of heaven. When we will be able to no longer have an earthly barrier but will be able to see him fully. I can’t wait for that day!
